About Me

Educational History:

I grew up in Durham, North Carolina and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Go Heels!) in May, 2012. I wanted to teach and came to Pine Bluff through Teach For America in June, 2012. I taught at Lighthouse Charter School for two years, taught briefly at eStem Charter School in Little Rock from 2014-2015, and worked for Teach For America as an instructional coach in Pine Bluff and Helena-West Helena last year. I love teaching, and I am very excited to work with your scholar this year as we grow as readers, write many stories, and learn a great deal about the world and about ourselves.

Professional Development:

  • Daily 5 and CAFE
  • Responsive Classroom
  • Kagan Cooperative Learning
  • Write Steps Writing

Current Position:

During the school year, if you have any questions or concerns, please call, text, or email me. Your scholar’s success and confidence in reading are of the utmost importance to me. I  am always open to having a conference or talking on the phone. I want you to be able to reach me at all times, and I try to be available over weekends and holidays. My cell phone number is (919)-225-8871, and my email address is bethany.dhanaraj@pinebluffschools.org. While I am not able to respond to calls or message during the school day, I will make my best effort to respond to all messages by the next school day.

In our classroom...

Scholars will be expected to do their best work each day. Each student is expected to grow eight reading levels this year in our class, or more than two academic years in reading. Students will read books of their choice every day, as well as novels that the whole class is reading. I teach through a workshop style of instruction in which I get to meet individually with every student to help them grow as readers. Students will be expected to type all of their writing assignments in class, as well as make Power Point presentations. Additionally, they will write some stories that they will publish on a class website. Scholars will have a daily quiz and weekly quiz. Your work with your scholar at home is very valued, and I will send home scholars’ progress reports every two weeks, along with weekly class newsletters on Fridays.
